Sweetwater 420 Extra Pale Ale

Brewer Description
SweetWater 420 Extra Pale Ale, our most popular brew, is a tasty West Coast Style Pale Ale with a stimulating hop character and a crisp finish. 1st brewed on April 20th 1997.

Sweetwater Brewery has recently expanded into Ohio, our home state. Their craft beers will now be available in Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo and Youngstown. Ohioans are excited for the new distribution of Sweetwater beer into our local bars and beer shops.

My first taste of Sweetwater in Ohio is their 420 Extra Pale Ale. This beer is a West Coast Style pale ale brewed with Centennial and Cascade hops. It pours a light, golden bronze hue and with a bitter and sweet fragrance. The beer tastes as the name implies; it is beyond a pale ale.

The maltiness of 420 Extra Pale ale is light-bodied with notes of bread and caramel from the Munich malts. The hops are very faint tasting up front, but as the beer finishes, you get a dry bitterness that makes the extra pale ale.

Overall, I wasn’t impressed. I expected a big, bitter beer that is true to the West Coast style. Even though this is not what I expected, it is still a very tasty, light and session-able craft pale ale. I look forward to the rest of what Sweetwater has to offer.
